The EAST Challenge 2013: Brandberg Königstein Summit Trek!

BrandbergTreckDear adventurers,

The eLearning Africa Scholarship Trust (EAST) is very excited to announce the details of the EAST Challenge 2013.

Every year, EAST awards scholarships to low-income African nationals to attend eLearning Africa. Gathering funds to cover the costs of as many of the fantastic scholarship applicants as possible requires some tough fund-raising efforts, so to help us reach our goal we have organised the EAST Challenge – a five day trek to the summit of Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg (2573m above sea level).

We are looking for adventurous people with a taste for the outdoors to help us with our valuable work. For a minimum donation of 450€, you can join us on the trek, with all profits going towards funding the travel, accommodation, visa and conference registration costs of inspirational grass-roots education practitioners from across Africa.

In return for your donation, you will receive travel to the mountain, four nights of camping accommodation, equipment hire (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent and backpack), three meals per day, water, at least one English-speaking guide and hiking permits!

To secure your place on the Challenge, send us an email at challenge@easttrust.org. You will then have to make a minimum donation of €450 to EAST, either directly, via our online donation form, or by raising money through your personal network. Luckily, we have arranged a hassle-free way for you to do so, via the non-profit fundraising platform, Betterplace.org. On Betterplace, you can set up a personal Challenge profile to share with your friends and colleagues. Donations can be made via the site, which are sent directly on to EAST.

To find out more about EAST, exact details pertaining to the trek and information on signing up, please visit our website:

We look forward to sharing this unforgettable adventure with you in June.

Warm regards,

Alicia Mitchell
Fundraising Co-Ordinator

P.S. The trek is open to anyone, not just eLearning Africa attendees – the more the merrier!

Weiße_Dame_BrandbergThe Trek:

June 1st:
Meeting in the morning at the Safari Hotel. We will set off from Windhoek by bus and head to Hungarob Gorge (700m above sea level), the starting point of our hike to the Königstein where we will spend the first night.

June 2nd:
With a total walking time of between six to eight hours, interspersed with plenty of breaks and a stop for lunch, we will ascend to the “Wasserfallfläche” (1950m), the base for the next day’s ascent to the Königstein.

The awesome view and a night under the stars will make the hard work of the day, surmounting giant boulders and granite rock plates on the afternoon’s tough ascent, all worthwhile.

June 3rd:
After just four or five hours’ walk we will reach the Königstein, the Brandberg’s highest point, to take in the view from the “top of Namibia”.

On the descent back to the base camp, a stop off at Snake Rock Cave will provide a chance to take in some of the beautiful san rock paintings the area is famed for. The night will again be spent under that stars at the “Wasserfallfläche”.

June 4th:
The six- to seven-hour descent will take us back to our starting point, ready to camp overnight at the base of the mountain.

June 5th:
Breakfast at the base of the mountain before returning to Windhoek by bus.
